The Heartmade Blessings website (www.heartmadeblessings.org), which is devoted to making comfortghans and pins for those in need of a little comfort in their lives, is undertaking a new aspect of making comfortghans for those who have lost their lives or were injured serving in the US military, injured or killed as a result of friendly fire or injured or killed in enemy captivity. This pattern is an afghan square pattern dedicated to those who receive the Purple Heart.
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn (purple, gold, white, red, black and green)
Crochet hook size G / 6 / 4.25MM
Stitch Notes (American):
Chain (ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Single Crochet (sc)
Yarn Over (YO)
Beginning (beg)
Gauge: 2 sc = ½ inch
Finished size: 12" to 12" (inches)
Notes: It's up to you if you want to work over all or some of the unused yarn to "carry" it along in your work. Odd-numbered rows are read from right to left on chart and even-numbered rows are read from left to right on chart. Row 1 is the bottom of chart and Row 36 is the top of the chart. Each square on chart equals 1 sc stitch. White squares = white yarn; black squares = black yarn; purple squares = purple ....and so forth.
Additional Notes: To change colors, work a sc with the old color, then, pull the new color through the last two loops to complete that single crochet. Always ch 1 and turn to begin each row.
To begin, ch 37.
Row 1: (With purple) 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across; ch 1, turn (now and thoughout pattern). (36 sc).
Row 2: 1 Sc in each of 1st 17 sc, (change to gold) 1 sc in each of next 2 sc (change to purple) 1 sc in each of last 17 sc (17 purple, 2 gold, 17 purple).
Row 3: 1 Sc in each of 1st 15 sc, (change to gold) 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, (change to purple) 1 sc in each of last 15 sc; ch 1, turn (15 purple, 6 gold, 15 purple).
Row 4: 1 Sc in each of 1st 14 sc, (change to gold) 1 sc in each of next 8 sc, (change to purple) 1 sc in each of last 14 sc (14 purple, 8 gold, 14 purple).
Rows 5-36: Continue pattern according to chart making the color changes in chart. At the end of last row, do not fasten off. Note: If you need to add more sc rows after Row 36 in white yarn, simply repear Row 2 until the height and width measure "square". I had to add 4 extra rows to the top of my square.
EDGING:
At the end of last row, work sc stitches all around perimeter of square also working 3 sc in each corners. HINT: if doing a round of sc stitches is not enough to make your square 12" x 12", you can do instead a round of hdc stitches or dc stitches.
Fasten off and sew in ends well with large-eyed sewing needle.
Image coming soon....when I created this pattern, I didn't have on hand the needed yarn colors.
