Stitch Notes (American) and Abbreviations:
Chain(ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Single Crochet (sc)
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Double Crochet (dc)
Yarn Over (YO)
Beginning (beg)

Gauge: 2 sc = 1/2" (inches); 5 sc = 1 1/2". Finished size:

53" x 68". Notes: Each square/block on chart is equal to 1 sc stitch. Always work over unused strand to carry it along in work. Odd-numbered rows are read from right to left on chart. Even-numbered rows are read from left to right on chart.
Additional Notes: To change colors, work a sc in the old color, then, pull the new color through the last two loops to complete that single crochet. Then continue with new color on chart until there is another color change and change colors as before. Also, you will consistently have a total of 162 sc stitches on each row, no matter what colors were used. Thirdly, begin each row with a ch-1.

Chain 163.

Row 1: (With True Black) 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across; ch 1, turn. (162 sc).

Row 2: 1 Sc in first sc, 1 sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn (162 sc).

Row 3: 1 Sc in first sc, 1 sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn (162 sc).

Row 4: 1 Sc in each of first 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc and do the last pull-through of this sc with the green color and drop the black color. Now, crocheting over and "carrying" the unused black color, 1 sc in next 156 sc changing back to black color as previous color change earlier in this row. Work 1 sc in each of next 3 sc (do not crochet over the unused green color so as to keep it handy when you need it again); ch 1, turn (3 black sc, 156 green sc, 3 black sc).

Row 5: 1 Sc in first 3 sc changing to green in 3rd sc, 1 sc in each of next 156 sc, crocheting over the unused black color, change to black and work 1 sc in last 3 sc; ch 1, turn (3 black sc, 156 green sc, 3 black sc).

Rows 5 - 180: Work afghan according to chart and make color changes as indicated on chart. At the end of Row 180, do not turn. Fasten off black and attach new color if desired. Do not fasten off if you wish to edge in black.

Note: It's easier to crochet over the unused colors when you are on the yellow letters and the sun, but do not crochet and carry over the unused yellow color in the entire afghan. Same technique applies for the gold color for the road behind the Stargate and the dark gray color of the Stargate.

EDGING

Rnd 1: Attach new color (if using color other than black), in last sc of Row 180. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st = corner made. Working along sides of rows, work 1 sc in side of each row across. Work corner in next corner sc; work 1 sc in opposite side of foundation chain, work corner in next corner sc. Continue in same manner around remaining 2 sides and join with sl st in beg sc.

Rnd 2: (You will be working this round in the direction of a reverse sc). Ch 2, 1 hdc in st to right of beg ch-2=1 Reverse Hdc made, ch 2, skip 1 sc. (1 Reverse Hdc, ch 2, skip 1 sc) across to corner. In corner ch-2 sp work 1 Reverse Hdc, ch 2, 1 Reverse Hdc, ch 2, skip 1 sc. Continue in same manner all around and join with sl st in base of beg ch-2. Fasten off and sew in all ends well with a large-eyed sewing needle.

Rnd 2 (alternate): Ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc around and work 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off and sew in all ends well with large-eyed sewing needle.
