Materials:
Worsted weight yarn: solid white and solid blue
Crochet hook size G / 6 / 4.25MM
Stitch Notes (American):
Chain (ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Single Crochet (sc)
Beginning (beg)
Gauge: 2 sc = ½ inch
Finished size: 12" to 12" (inches)
Notes: When making the star, be sure to carry your unused colors by working over the unused color at the time. Odd-numbered rows are read from right to left on chart and even-numbered rows are read from left to right on chart. Row 1 is the bottom of chart and Row 32 is the top of the chart. Each square on chart equals 1 sc stitch. White squares = white yarn; black squares = blue yarn.
Additional Notes: To change colors, work a sc with the old color, then, pull the new color through the last two loops to complete that single crochet. Always ch 1 and turn to begin each row. Also, if needed for extra height to make the pattern more "square," add more rows of sc's after Row 32.
(With white) ch 33.
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across; ch 1, turn (now and throughout pattern). (32 white sc).
Rows 2-5: 1 Sc in each sc across.
Row 6: 1 Sc in each of 1st 15 sc, (change to blue) 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, (change to white) 1 sc in each of last 15 sc; ch 1, turn (15 white, 2 blue, 15 white).
Row 7-32: Continue pattern according to chart making the color changes in chart. At the end of last row, do not fasten off.
EDGING:
Work a round of sc stitches all around perimeter also working 3 stitches in each corner, to prevent curling. HINT: if doing a round of sc stitches is not enough to make your square 12" x 12", you can do instead a round of hdc stitches or dc stitches, or simply add another row(s) of sc's.
Fasten off and sew in ends well with large-eyed sewing needle.
